PAUL CHARLTON - WRITER

Paul trained as an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. In 1999, at 16 years old, Paul was one of ten young writers commissioned by Paines Plough to write a short play for their production of BLACK ON WHITE SHORTS directed by Jessica Dromgoole and staged at Live Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Bolton Octagon and Bristol Old Vic. The subsequent full length production of the play entitled LOVE, SEX AND CIDER won a Fringe First Award in 2003 and toured in January 2005 across England and Scotland playing to sell out audiences at venues including the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, Tron Theatre Glasgow and Contact Theatre Manchester. In 2003&2005 he wrote short plays entitled LOVE IS PLAYING CARDS and ON THE LINE OF FIRE respectively in 24 hours for Live Theatre Newcastle as part of their new writing festivals. In 2004 his piece MOVING FAMILY was also staged by the theatre as part of their summer youth theatre season. He is also currently under commission by Live Theatre and his play entitled THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET is scheduled for production early next year. In May last year Paul completed a year long residency with New Writing North for whom he wrote IMMACULATE DECEPTION. His most recent work includes THE DEVIL’S CHAIN’S a site specific piece for the National Youth Theatre. As a sketch writer Paul has written for ‘The Karen Dunbar Show’ series 2 (Comedy Unit/BBC Scotland) and is currently developing a new sketch show as part of a small team of writer/performers for BBC3 with producers John Pocock and Michael Buffong. He is also under commission to Rollem Productions as part of a new writing scheme funded by Screen Yorkshire. Paul has also tutored in playwriting for Watford Palace Theatre and is an associate artist of the National Youth Theatre.
