AL SMITH - WRITER

His first play "CHALK" was performed by the Edinburgh University Theatre Company in February 2005. His second "ENOLA" premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2005, before touring to the Arches Theatre, Glasgow, and the National Student Drama Festival 2006 where he won the Sunday Times Playwriting Award. His third play "THE ASTRONAUT WIVES CLUB" was shortlisted for the Old Vic New Voices Award before playing at the Soho Theatre in August 2006. His fourth play "RADIO" premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2006 and was produced Off Broadway at Theatre 59E59 in June 2007. Al has done an attachment at Paines Plough, was a playwright in residence at the Finborough Theatre, was selected for the Old Vic 24 Hour Plays, was a young writer at the Royal Court Theatre. He was the winner of the 2006 Pearson Playwriting Award and the Sunday Time Playwriting Award for a second time with RADIO. In 2007 Al did the BBC Writers Academy and in 2008/9 has written episodes for HOLBY and EASTENDERS as well as theatre piece THE BIRD which received four star notices at Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Current commissions include THE CUT, an interactive series for BBC Switch which Al co-created,exec-produced and wrote, a new play for The Bush Theatre and a five-part radio serial for Womans Hour called THE POSTMAN OF GOOD HOPE.
